What you can do about terrible politicians
Democracies get the governments they deserve. Unfortunately. Here's how you can help improve the quality of politicians.
Prospects for this country look dire. We approach a Budget in which it appears the Chancellor is incapable of either cutting spending or raising taxes. So it seems the Government will further grind up taxes from historic highs by various standard ruses, like freezing or lowering thresholds and so on. It seems experience in power has taught Labour their original plan to end illegal migration won’t work, so they are heading right, implausibly: it seems unlikely their MPs or members will wear it. A right-wing migration policy will be welfare cuts all over again.
After not much more than a year in power, this Labour Government can reasonably be written up in The Spectator as an “omnishambles”. It’s not good for anyone.
There is no way for the public to force an early general election. General elections are held when the Prime Minister calls one, automatically after five years or on losing a vote of confidence in His Majesty’s Government. Losing a confidence vote is not likely: Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas so Labour MPs won’t rebel to force an election in which they would be banned from being Labour candidates. His Majesty the King only calls an election on the advice of ministers.
What is to be done? Here’s how we can obtain better politicians and better government, more in line with the principles of a free society.
